Volunteer Opportunities

Performance by volunteers at the NYS Veterans' Home is exceptional. Individual volunteers contribute in various areas of residents' lives. Many offer personal attention during activities such as bingo games, card games, concerts and parties as well as church services and other large group events. Some other volunteers do more personal things like mending services, assistance with our therapy department by transporting residents to and from their therapy sessions or assisting residents to and from their eye doctor appointments in our clinic, to their beauty shop appointments or the barber. We have volunteers who pay room visits to residents to tend and water houseplants, write letters, read mail or just chat. Still others transport residents to and from the gift shop which is operated by volunteers.

We are also graced with a number of organizations that assist our residents in many different ways. The Volunteer Guild, American Legion and Auxiliaries, the DAV, VFW, and several ELKS Clubs contribute to the residents' quality of life by creative fundraising, with the ever-popular bingo games, holiday parties, and sponsorship of entertainment. Several of these organizations have adopted certain neighborhoods and provide special events not only during holidays but throughout the year.
