Interpreting Data
These data show only a small proportion of people who have asthma, those whose condition is serious enough to require an ED visit or hospital stay.
Data show the number of asthma ED visits and hospitalizations rather than the number of patients who were admitted or seen for asthma related illness. For example, if a person was hospitalized twice they would be counted twice.

About Unstable Rates
When an asthma ED visit or hospitalization rate is based on small numbers, an increase or decrease
of just 1 or 2 asthma ED visit or hospitalizations from year to year can cause the
asthma ED visit or hospitalization rate to change dramatically; such a rate is
likely to be unstable. Unstable asthma ED visit or hospitalization rates
are marked with the symbol
in data tables when the rate is based on fewer than 12 cases. These rates should be interpreted with caution.
