New York State EMS Certification Examination

OVERVIEW

Identifies the bearer as having successfully completed the training program and passed the state practical and written examinations for emergency medical services practitioner who is responsible for the administration of initial life-saving care of sick and injured persons.

To obtain certification, applicant must demonstrate competency in assessment of a patient, use Basic Life Support equipment and techniques within their scope of practice. Must be able to perform CPR, control bleeding, provide non- invasive treatment of hypoperfusion, manage environmental emergencies and provide initial care in medical trauma emergencies and emergency childbirth.

  • You must be at least 16 years old
  • Successfully complete a New York State approved EMS training course
  • Pass a New York State practical skills exam
EMT
  • You must be at least 17 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or GED certificate
  • Successfully complete a New York State approved EMS training course

AEMT
  • You must be at least 17 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or GED certificate
  • Successfully complete a New York State approved EMS training course

Paramedic

A $28 fee is payable to the testing contractor at the time of registration.

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

Completion of Course After the Scheduled Course End Date
Students who have not completed all course requirements prior to the scheduled course ending date will be listed as ineligible to test on the end of course paperwork submitted by the course instructor to the Department. Ineligible students have one-year from the schedule course end date to complete all course requirements and schedule an examination. It is the student's responsibility to work with their instructor to complete all course requirements and complete a practical skills examination. Once completed, the instructor will upload the practical skills examination results to the Department portal and the student may register for the New York State Certification Examination. Students who do not complete the course requirements and certification examination after one-year will be required to retake the course. 
 
Rescheduling Examination Prior To The Test Date
Students who are unable to attend a scheduled test date should contact PSI a lest 24 hours prior to the scheduled date and time to reschedule the examination. There will be no charge for a rescheduled examination as long as the student provides proper notification. Students who reschedule an examination less than 24 hours prior to the scheduled date and time of the examination will forfeit the examination fee and should follow the instructions for missed scheduled test date. 

Missed Scheduled Test Date
Students who are not able to take the certification examination at the scheduled date and time, must notify PSI at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled certification examination. Students who are not present at the scheduled date and time of a certification examination without providing the required notification to PSI will be marked as absent and will forfeit the examination fee. Students marked absent from an examination will need to submit a registration for the New York State Certification Examination. It may take up to 10 business days to reset the students PSI account and allow scheduling of a new certificaiton examination.
  
Retesting After Failed Attempt
Retests due to failure are to be requested by emailing the DOH 4245 form and a copy of their failure results to ems.test.schedule@health.ny.gov.  Please make sure the student is aware that pictures are not acceptable.  The request needs to be in the form of an email with the documents attached.  Pictures will not be accepted and deleted with no response to the student. Once these documents are received the student or the email the documents were received from will get a response; one of these three options:

  • Your information will be uploaded; look for an email from PSI within 7 to 10 days
  • Your unable to be scheduled for an exam at this time due to ………..
  • Your information was already uploaded to PSI on (date), look in your spam or junk mail for an email from PSI with your eligibility.

Testing After Investigation Clearance
Students who have not received a background investigation clearance letter prior to the scheduled course end date will be listed as ineligible to test on the end of course paperwork submitted by the course instructor to the Department. Ineligible students with a pending background investation will have one-year from the schduled course end date to submit all requested information to the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Trauam Systems Investigation Unit, complete a practical skills examination, and schedule a certification examination. It is the student's responsibility to work with their course instructor to schedule a practical skills examination once a background investigation clearance letter is received. Once completed, the instructor will upload the practical skills examination results to the Department portal and the student may register for the New York State Certification Examination.
